What is Real-Time Bidding?

Real-time bidding (RTB) is the buying (and selling) of online ad impressions in real time through an auction that occurs in the time it takes a webpage to load. The auction occurs through sellers (SSPs) and buyers (DSPs) and facilitated on an ad exchange, or marketplace. Each impression that meets the target audience criteria is bid upon and purchased individually. Please note: All programmatic is not in real time, but all real time bidding is programmatic.

What is Programmatic Advertising?

Programmatic ad buying refers to the use of software (a DSP) to purchase digital advertising, as opposed to the traditional process that involves RFPs, human negotiations and manual insertion orders. Programmatic is an extremely efficient method to purchasing ad inventory.

What is a Demand-Side Platform?

A Demand Side Platform (DSP) is automated buying software that advertisers leverage to access digital advertising inventory directly from sellers (Supply Side Platforms, or SSPs), removing the middleman. DSPs target people, and ad inventory that can be purchased through a DSP includes banner ads on the web, mobile web, and in-app; connected TV, audio, native, and more.
